Rondane National Park is one of Norway's most iconic and oldest national parks, established in 1962. Located in the southern part of the country, it offers some of the best opportunities for hiking, skiing, and experiencing nature at its purest.
With its towering mountains, clear lakes, and untouched wilderness, Rondane is perfect for those seeking a peaceful retreat or an adventurous journey.
In this guide, we’ll provide you with all the essential information for planning your trip to Rondane, from transport options to ticket prices, the best times to visit, and useful tips for your stay.

How to Get to Rondane National Park

The easiest way to reach Rondane National Park is by train, bus, or car. Here’s a breakdown:
By Car: From Oslo, the capital of Norway, it’s about a 3.5-hour drive (approximately 300 kilometers) to the park. If we’re driving from Otta, it’s a short 30-minute drive to the park’s entrance points.
By Train: For those traveling by train, we can take the Oslo to Otta train, which takes about 4.5 hours. Once we arrive in Otta, we can rent a car or take a local bus to the park.
By Bus: There are also buses connecting Otta to other towns and cities in Norway, making public transportation a feasible option for those without a car.
For ease of travel, renting a car upon arrival in Otta is recommended, as it gives us more flexibility to explore the park and surrounding areas at our own pace.

Best Time to Visit Rondane National Park

Rondane is beautiful year-round, but the best time to visit really depends on the activities we want to enjoy.
Summer (June to August): This is the most popular time to visit. The weather is mild, and it’s perfect for hiking. Temperatures range from 50°F to 68°F (10°C to 20°C). However, be prepared for crowds, as many hikers and outdoor lovers flock to the park during this time. We recommend booking accommodation early if visiting in the summer.
Autumn (September to October): If we prefer quieter trails and beautiful fall colors, autumn is a great time to go. The temperatures are cooler, and the landscape is covered in golden and red hues. The fall months also offer fewer tourists, making it easier to find solitude.
Winter (December to March): For winter sports enthusiasts, the snowy landscapes of Rondane are ideal for skiing, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing. The park receives heavy snowfall, making the winter months perfect for those who want to experience Norway’s snowy wilderness.
Spring (April to May): This is a quieter time to visit, with temperatures ranging from 36°F to 50°F (2°C to 10°C). The spring flowers start to bloom, and the park begins to thaw. It’s an excellent time to hike with fewer crowds, though some trails might still be muddy due to melting snow.

Ticket Prices and Opening Hours

Entrance Fees: There are no entrance fees to access the park itself. However, there may be small charges for guided tours, parking, and visiting the visitor center.
Visitor Center: The main visitor center is located near the park’s entrance in Mysuseter and is open from 9 AM to 5 PM during the summer months (June to August). In the winter months (November to March), the center operates on reduced hours, typically from 10 AM to 3 PM.
Accommodation: There are several mountain cabins and lodges within and around the park, including the Rondvassbu Cabin and the Dørålseter Cabin. Prices vary depending on the season, with rooms ranging from $30 to $85 USD (NOK 300 to NOK 800) per night. It’s advisable to book accommodation in advance, especially during the peak summer months.

U-shaped Valley Trails: For a less strenuous experience, the U-shaped valley trails are easy hikes suitable for beginners and families. These trails offer scenic views of the valleys and surrounding mountains.

Winter Activities: During the winter months, Rondane is a popular spot for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and ice fishing. Ski rentals are available at variouslocations, including the visitor center and mountain cabins.
