Have you ever dreamed of discovering a natural wonder that feels untouched and magical? The Heart of Stone in Corsica, France, is exactly that. This heart-shaped rock formation is tucked away in the island’s rugged mountains and surrounded by lush valleys and cliffs.
It’s perfect for hikers, photographers, and nature enthusiasts who want a mix of adventure and breathtaking scenery.
Whether we are chasing the perfect photo, exploring trails, or simply soaking in the view, this hidden gem promises an unforgettable experience. Let’s explore how to make the most of our visit.

Getting There

We usually start from Ajaccio, Corsica’s capital. Renting a car is the most practical option because public transport in the mountains is limited. The drive to Piana takes about 1.5 hours (approximately 80 km) along scenic but winding roads, with occasional narrow stretches, so careful driving is essential. If we come from Bastia, the drive is about 3.5 hours. Public buses are available but limited, so checking schedules and booking in advance is advised.
Parking near the trailhead is free but can fill up during peak season, so arriving early is recommended. GPS coordinates for the trailhead are roughly 42.3°N, 9.2°E, but asking locals for directions can also be fun and helpful.

Hiking the Trail

The hike to the Heart of Stone is moderate, suitable for most Lykkers with basic hiking experience.
- Distance: 5–6 km round trip
- Duration: 2–3 hours
- Elevation gain: ~250 meters
- Difficulty: Moderate
We recommend starting early in the morning (8:00–9:00 AM) to enjoy cooler temperatures and soft sunlight for photography. Along the trail, we encounter fragrant maquis shrubs, wildflowers, and panoramic mountain views. Essentials include comfortable hiking shoes, water (at least 1.5 liters per person), snacks, and layered clothing for changing weather. Some sections are steep, so hiking with a friend is safer.

Viewing the Heart of Stone

Upon arrival, the Heart of Stone is breathtaking. The rock formation sits on a cliff, perfectly shaped like a heart, framed by green valleys and distant peaks. For photography, wide-angle lenses capture the scale, while zoom lenses allow us to focus on the heart shape itself. Early morning or late afternoon is ideal for golden light and dramatic shadows.
The site is open year-round and free to access, making it easy to plan without worrying about tickets.

After visiting the Heart of Stone, we can explore nearby natural and cultural spots.
